EIFL is co-organizing a workshop that aims to develop a cohesive strategy for strengthening open access (OA) repositories in Africa.
The two-day workshop is the first in a series of meetings on OA repositories in Africa. It is co-organized in partnership with COAR (Confederation of Open Access Repositories) and WACREN (West and Central African Research and Education Network).
The workshop, which will take place in conjunction with the UbuntuNet Conference, will bring together library and NREN (research and education high speed network) stakeholders from African countries. The focus of discussion will be how repositories can better engage with NREN services to break down institutional silos, add value to repositories, and support the growth of open science in the region.
EIFL Open Access Programme Manager Iryna Kuchma will speak about the role of repositories, networking and interoperability of repositories, and present an OpenAIRE case study. Representatives of EIFL partner consortia, David Bukenya (CUUL, Uganda) and Rosemary Otando and Felix Rop (University of Nairobi and KLISC, Kenya) will share their experiences of supporting repositories as a part of the ‘OA policy development in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda to make more digital content available’ project, which was funded by Spider (the Swedish Programme for ICT in Developing Regions DSV, Department of Computer and System Sciences, Stockholm University).
