EIFL is pleased to organize a webinar on Nigeria’s new Copyright Act, adopted in 2023, in cooperation with the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC).

EIFL’s analysis of the law shows it to be one of the most progressive in the world with respect to libraries and library activities. For example, there are new provisions allowing libraries to make copies of copyright-protected works consistent with their mission, such as supporting education and research, preserving Nigerian cultural heritage and providing inclusive services for people with disabilities. The law also contains a more flexible fair dealing provision enabling activities that might not fall within the scope of specific exceptions, and it safeguards uses of digital content permitted by the new exceptions.

Dr. John O. Asein, Director-General, Nigerian Copyright Commission will provide opening remarks. ​Jonathan Band PLLC, who prepared EIFL’s analysis, will describe the key features of the law for libraries, and Dr Desmond Oriakhogba, Associate Professor, University of the Western Cape, South Africa, will comment on the law from an African perspective.
