The presentation provides an overview of the key issues that librarians and consortium managers need to consider when thinking of e-books. It explores the current e-book marketplace, centering around four key topic areas:
- E-book platforms (types of devices, publication formats and standards, operating systems, and infrastructure)
- Content (focusing primarily on purchased scholarly e-books, with some discussion of trade and other e-book publications, including a discussion of language of content, usage statistics and preservation issues)
- Purchasing (including purchase options such as commercial and university press aggregators, title-by-title purchase, demand-driven acquisitions, licenses and ownership, and annual subscriptions), and
- Policies and practices (such as e-book and device lending and reserves)
