In this hour-long EIFL webinar, Lisa Loven, Librarian at Stockholm University, shows how she tracks the Article Processing Charges (APCs) from their corresponding authors’ open access publications through their university’s accounting system.

Within the global transition to open access, libraries are trying to understand the total cost paid to publishers, both for subscriptions to content and for publishing of open access articles by their corresponding authors. While libraries know what they pay for subscriptions, determining open access publishing costs - namely the amount of Article Processing Charges (APCs) - paid to publishers can be difficult. One way of estimating the amount spent on APCs is to look at publication output data, and calculate based on average APC data. At the start of this webinar, Romy Beard, EIFL Licensing Programme Manager, briefly shows how this can be done.

The rest of the webinar is run by guest speaker Loven, who shows sample invoices and spreadsheets used in her tracking of APC spend, and discusses the work involved in cleaning up the data. She finishes by providing some tips for institutions that are interested in following the same path in APC monitoring.
