A range of new resources and services has been added to the European Diamond Capacity Hub (EDCH) that was launched in 2025 for Diamond open access (OA) publishers and service, tool and technology providers. The EDCH was developed by the DIAMAS and CRAFT-OA projects with the aim of advancing Diamond open access publishing across Europe. EIFL is a partner in the DIAMAS project.
Diamond OA is an equitable model of scholarly publication that charges no fees to authors or readers and in which the content-related elements of publication are owned and controlled by the scholarly communities.
The most recent resources and services added to the EDCH are Recommendations on Diamond OA for Institutions, Funders, Sponsors, Donors, and Policymakers; a forum that facilitates networking and discussions on Diamond OA publishing; a registry of Diamond OA publishing and service providing organizations, and a training platform. Iryna Kuchma and Milica Ševkušić of the EIFL Open Access Programme created and reviewed training courses and are helping with the Forum and Registry moderation.
Community: Forum and Registry
The ECDH Forum is a collaborative space for the Diamond OA publishing community to exchange knowledge, share best practices, ask questions, get help and discuss collaborations. We invite everyone involved in Diamond OA publishing in Europe to register and participate in the discussions.
We also invite organizations that are producing and distributing scholarly content, including books, journals, and conference proceedings, as well as infrastructure and support services providers in the European Research Area (European Union member states and the associated countries), to join the registry and showcase their expertise, services and operational capacities. The registry helps to get recognition for Diamond OA publishing and find collaborators and partners.
Training platform
The training platform helps enhance skills and includes skill-building training modules and curricula on Diamond OA publishing. 12 courses cover a range of topics, from editorial quality, research integrity and peer-review processes, including open peer review, to copyright and licensing, financial sustainability, governance and ownership, publishing platforms and digital preservation, metadata for improved discoverability and interoperability, preprints and repository deposit policies and policies for sharing research data, protocols and software, negative results publishing and Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging (EDIB) strategies, focusing on gender diversity, multilingualism and accessibility.
See the courses and stay up-to-date with the latest developments, practices, tools and standards.
Diamond OA Recommendations and Guidelines for Institutions, Funders, Sponsors, Donors, and Policymakers
The new Diamond OA Recommendations and Guidelines highlight the collective responsibility for Diamond OA publishing and the need for all stakeholders to collaborate in order to ensure long-term sustainability of Diamond OA publishing. The Recommendations also set out several strategic pathways for fostering Diamond OA publishing, from strengthening positive research cultures, to ensuring that scholarly publishing is financially sustainable, and addressing the dynamics of authority, patronage, and legitimacy that include both top-down and bottom-up initiatives when supporting Diamond OA publishing. The Recommendations have been designed with flexibility in mind, allowing adaptation to suit the specific needs of each organization designing their Diamond OA policies and strategies.
