Public libraries are playing an increasingly important role in helping communities to navigate today's complex information landscape. Today, this includes helping people to understand and use artificial intelligence (AI) by providing AI literacy education.
The 20th EIFL Public Library Innovation Award call recognizes outstanding and innovative public and community library AI literacy training programmes that help people to advance their technical skills, think critically about AI outputs, and enable responsible and safe use of emerging AI technology and tools.
For example, Ghana’s Central Regional Library is teaching high school students how to use ChatGPT to advance their education; in Canada, Toronto Public Library trains people from marginalized communities to use AI to boost their employability and provides free access to AI tools otherwise only available by subscription; Esperance Public Library in Australia hosts free community workshops on AI and misinformation aimed at teaching practical skills for questioning, verifying, and navigating online information, and spotting AI-manipulated content, such as deepfakes.
