ABOUT THE RESOURCE
This PowerPoint presentation is designed to support public librarians in delivering engaging and informative training for young people on the topic of misinformation. The training helps learners to recognize different types of false or misleading online content and to develop skills to evaluate online information that is shared with them, or that they want to share with others.
The presentation was compiled by Ugne Lipeikaite, Impact Manager of the EIFL Public Library Innovation Programme (EIFL-PLIP), using materials developed by the Center for an Informed Public at the University of Washington. Public library trainers Yusuf Ganyana (Kenya), Jeff Nyoka (South Africa), and Prince Osei-Gyamfi (Ghana) contributed valuable insights to help localize the resource for African communities.
Trainer notes are included and the presentation is structured around the following sections:
- Icebreaker Activity: Truth or Trick? Starts the session with fun and surprising statements to spark critical thinking.
- Core Concepts: Introduces and explains key terms such as misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation.
- Real-life Examples: Helps participants to identify various common types of misleading content through real-life cases.
- Hands-on Activities: Includes two practical exercises:
- Can You Trust It? — a guided discussion on evaluating information sources
- Spot the Fake Image — analyzing visuals to detect manipulation or AI-generated content
